A new year

I concluded my post By Design with the question “What will you design today?”

My hope with this post was to illustrate the important role design plays in our day to day lives and highlight how we are all in fact designers.

The choices we make each day, whether purposeful or not, ultimately come together to create the canvas of our current lives.

The good news is that our canvas can be re-imagined and redesigned.

If we’re not pleased with the current pattern of our impact, we can choose to start with a clean slate and add a new combination of beliefs, attitudes, and mindset to support our best work. We can leverage our gifts and unique life experiences to create stuff that changes people for the better and leads to something worth celebrating.

I’ve used part of these past few weeks of “time off" reflecting on the question above. It’s been a humbling experience. Helpful in learning to have more grace toward myself and others. Many areas where I currently feel confident and accomplished. But as always, many areas where I want to continue to grow.

Below are a few thoughts that came out of this reflection. Enjoy!

Thoughts to the question What will you design today?

  • A curious attitude toward myself and others (ie. actions, thoughts, beliefs).
  • I will take ownership of my commitments.
  • I will take responsibility of the impact I have on others regardless of my intentions.
  • I will slow down to better understand.
  • I will be open to learning from all situations, especially those where I'm most uncomfortable.
  • I will see fear as an opportunity instead of an excuse to shy away.
  • I will see myself and act as someone who is loving, patient, and supportive.
  • I will have grace for myself and others, with the understanding that we are all imperfect and can (if we choose to) learn from our experiences.
  • I will show up as a professional not because I have to but because that’s the invitation I’ve accepted.
