Levers, leverage and teeter-totters

For those of you who are less familiar with the mechanics of levers, here is a basic explanation, simply put, they allow us to perform certain activities, like hauling dirt or teeter-tottering your big brother up in the air, with a fraction of the effort.

Teeter-totters, like many other forms of levers, serve a particular purpose. They give the user leverage, or the positional advantage to influence the state of something or someone. And, whether or not we are aware of it, we interact with these levers often throughout our day, from the knife you use to chop your veggies to the bottle opener you use to pop open your favorite cold drink. Topo Chico anyone?

But these physical levers have an awesome and similarly powerful big sister of a lever, our gifts, the skills and knowledge we have acquired through our life experiences, professional endeavors, and creative work. Perhaps your lever is the knowledge you hold about a particular body of work, service, or product. Or maybe it’s your ability to communicate well with others through patience, active listening, and empathy.

Like the more mechanical levers, our gifts have immense value and purpose. And they are meant to be leveraged for good. That’s the whole point. Each of us has something unique to us, worthy of being shared with the world. Capable of making a difference in another's life. Powerful enough to change the culture.

There is nobody else on this planet that has what you have and can do what you do the way that you can, with your unique spin.

Share your gifts. The world is better with more of you.
